Multiplying our mission in Oxford
Two years ago, an enthusiastic young man called Daniel approached Innovista, wanting to take part in our pilot Youth Ministry Training programme. He had a heart for youth work but very little experience, and wanted to be better equipped. Fast-forward a couple of years, and Daniel is now leading our youth work team in Blackbird Leys – a disadvantaged community on the edge of Oxford.
Daniel came alongside Devon, whose journey we have shared over the past few years. The leadership potential which was identified in Devon has since been developed through his participation in Innovista’s Young Leaders’ Programme, and more recently an Innovista GB project to develop Emerging Leaders.
“Devon has a wonderful rapport with the young people and has a real sense of what makes them tick.
He observes people wonderfully, and often picks up on things which I haven’t noticed.”
– Daniel Martin-Thomas – Leys Youth Team Leader
Devon is now working alongside Daniel as one of his volunteers, and is having a huge impact. In Daniel’s words,
“Devon has been a stalwart during lockdown. When we started doing Zoom sessions, I asked him to watch how I led them and prepare to start leading them himself. He now jointly leads the sessions with me, and for the last couple of months has been writing the session reports and the session plans. He has a wonderful rapport with the young people and has a real sense of what makes them tick. He observes people wonderfully, and often picks up on things which I haven’t noticed. He would be well able to lead the session by himself”.
It is wonderful to see how leaders can multiply their own impact by investing in other leaders. This model of identifying, training and equipping leaders is the heartbeat of Innovista. We can’t wait to share with you how Daniel and Devon go on multiplying their impact. As they invest in other young people with leadership potential, we know that we’ll see them bring change within their own communities around Oxford. Thank you for being part of of this life-changing work by supporting Innovista.
