Russian Student Turns Back to Christ
Yegor grew up in a Christian home in Russia, but when he was a teenager, he turned his back on God.
His church didn’t think his music taste was appropriate – Yegor is a big fan of Alternative Rock.‘I was tired of feeling judged by Christians, and stopped going to church.’
‘I’m not interested’
Now aged 20 at Omsk University, Yegor still has some Christian friends. They invited him to come to a Christian student group. Despite his reservations, Yegor showed up, but his first words on entering the room were: ‘I want you all to be clear – I am not interested in religion at all.’
The group is run by Alexandr, an inexperienced young leader full of passion and potential. Over the last 18 months, Innovista supporters have given Alexandr training and support that have helped him – and his ministry.
‘I was tired of feeling judged by Christians, and stopped going to church.’
Despite recent changes in Russian law restricting evangelism, Alexandr’s student ministry has grown from 20 to 50 students.
‘Something is missing’
Last Winter, some of these students went on a weekend away. Yegor came too. Afterwards he said, ‘There is something about how you relate to each other that is attractive to me. I feel like I’m missing something or someone but I don’t know what or who it is. Maybe it’s God but maybe it’s just my emotions.’

Alexandr was sure God was at work in Yegor’s life, but for months, nothing seemed to change. Until last month.
‘I realised God cares for me’
Alexandr’s team had organised a week of events to address university students’ big questions about Christianity.
He invited Yegor to help organise the events, and put him in charge of finding a band to play during the week. For once, Yegor thought, a Christian thinks my taste in music is a good thing!
That same week, Yegor wondered again about God, and prayed: ‘God if you are real, please show me.’
By the next day, God had answered his prayer.
Yegor was shining as he explained what happened: ‘I know God exists! I went to find a band and found a musician who likes Alternative Rock, and is also a Christian. I asked him if it’s possible to be a Christian and play this kind of music and he said “Yes, of course!” At that moment, I realised God cares for me and showed me this guy. He answered my prayer!’
Yegor wasn’t the only one changed by Jesus that week. Nine other students gave their lives to Christ. Please pray for Alexandr and his team who have started three small groups to help disciple Yegor and these new believers.
